Atlanta, GA ( PRWEB ) December 16, 2006 — MailChimp, an email marketing service created and managed by The Rocket Science Group, announced the publication of their Email Marketing Benchmarks for Small Business.
Email marketing benchmarks are statistics used to compare your email marketing performance with other businesses in your industry. Until now, these statistical breakdowns mostly included large retailers with million-dollar budgets and a dedicated marketing staff. Since MailChimp is mostly used by small businesses, the statistics of their customer base gives other small businesses a gauge to go by.
“There aren’t many resources available for measuring campaign effectiveness for small business owners, especially if they’re new to email marketing,” said Ben Chestnut, Managing Partner of MailChimp. “They would send a campaign and wonder, ‘How does my open rate stack up to others?’”
“We wanted a way for churches, restaurants, non-profits, and other small businesses to be able to compare their campaign results with other email marketers in their same industry,” said Chestnut.
MailChimp analyzed the open rates, click rates, bounces, unsubscribe, and spam complaints of over 30 million emails sent from their system, then broke down their results by industry. They found that the average open rate across all campaigns was 17.8%.
According to Chestnut, “You always hear that 20-30% is a good open rate. But we found that small businesses average around a 17% open rate.”
He added, “Clearly, small businesses need some help with their email marketing tactics, which is why we’ve included some tips improving their overall email campaign effectiveness on the web page.”
