# Overview

> How AI agents and assistants work with the Mailchimp Marketing API.

If you're coding against the Marketing API with an AI agent, two kinds of
tools are worth knowing about: some let your agent read this documentation
directly, and one teaches it to use the API the way an experienced Mailchimp
developer would.

## Read the docs

* [MCP server](/marketing/build/ai-tools/mcp-server) connects your agent to
this site over the Model Context Protocol, so it can search these docs from
your editor or terminal instead of you pasting passages into the
  conversation.
* [llms.txt](/marketing/build/ai-tools/llms-txt) is a machine-readable index
of every page, in markdown. Point an agent at it to fetch docs directly,
  without parsing HTML.

Searching and fetching solve different problems: use the MCP server when your
agent doesn't know where to look, and llms.txt when it already knows which
page it needs.

## Call the API correctly

[Agent skills](/marketing/build/ai-tools/agent-skills) package Mailchimp's API
quirks, like tags being managed through `segments` and contacts addressed by
an MD5 hash of a lowercased email address, into instructions your agent loads
automatically for the relevant task. Install them once and every coding agent
that supports the format uses them from then on.
