Noteworthy partners of varying forms—business, romantic, creative—tell their shared story: how they found each other, and what it took to make their partnership work.
Every successful partnership, no matter what kind, is sort of a love story. Just finding the right person who you can be in a partnership with, takes a lot of luck. And if you can turn that into a relationship that lasts, and lets you build something together, that’s kind of a miracle. It doesn’t matter if what you’re making is a company, or a movie, or a marriage. For two people to co-exist and collaborate, that takes work, and it takes love. That’s what this new podcast is about. It’s called Partners.
My name is Hrishikesh Hirway. I’m the host and creator of the podcast Song Exploder, and the co-host of The West Wing Weekly, two shows that are about getting deep into the details of how something gets made: a song, and a television show. And I wanted to do the same thing with great partnerships.
The idea for this show has lived in my head for a long time. You know the interstitial scenes in the movie When Harry Met Sally? Where these older couples give interviews and explain how they met and how they fell in love? I wanted to make something like that — not just about married people, but about all different kinds of partners.
The first season of the podcast features partners like the co-founders of Instagram, the co-creators of the Emmy-winning TV show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, the author and the illustrator of the hit cookbook Salt Fat Acid Heat, the co-hosts of the podcast Reply All, the twin sister bandmates Tegan & Sara, and many more.
Kevin Systrom: “Honestly that might have been a low in the company, but it was a high for me because it was us against the world.”
Samin Nosrat and Wendy MacNaughton: “So I got to know you I think also-” “Yeah and you drew me the first drawing you ever gave me.” “Was that that night?” “At the dinner, yeah. You drew me a picture of a turnip and you sent it to the kitchen.” “At that point, I was trying to woo her!”
PJ Vogt: “It’s not a thing I would’ve thought, you know, like a decade ago when there was this sort of new, weird intern. Like I wouldn’t have thought, like, ‘oh this is going to be a relationship that really defines a lot of my life’, you know?”
Partners is a Mailchimp production, made in partnership with Radiotopia. Subscribe to the podcast now on your favorite podcast app, so you can get the first episode as soon as it comes out. Thanks.
