MailChimp today announced the release of a MailChimp Add-In for Microsoft Outlook. The new integration, developed by Davton, brings MailChimp together with the world’s most popular desktop email client. MailChimp subscribers now have an easy way to sync their contacts and data from Outlook to MailChimp giving them greater control over all of their email communications.

The Add-In allows users to sync their Outlook contacts with a list in MailChimp and import MailChimp lists to Outlook. They can also view their MailChimp lists and campaign statistics on an aggregate level as well as by individual email address all from within Outlook. The contact panel makes it easy for users to check and change a the status of an individual email address in the MailChimp list from the Outlook interface. MailChimp Subscribers just pick an email address and the contact panel shows that person’s campaign activity, what lists they’ve subscribed to, which newsletters they’ve received and how they interacted with that newsletter (whether they opened or clicked etc.). There’s also an option to send a contact an invitation to opt-in to a newsletter if they aren’t currently on any lists.

The premium version of the Add-In adds a Sender Status Panel, which brings the Contact Panel’s functionality into Outlook’s email interface. This additional menu makes it simpler for team members to immediately check if an email sender is part of any MailChimp campaigns and how they’ve engaged with previous campaigns. It also allows users to easily add brand new contacts to Outlook and MailChimp (pending permission) simultaneously.

Microsoft Outlook remains the most popular desktop email client. In 2010 it boasted the leading enterprise level market share, and according to a study from Litmus, 43% of all email recipients use Outlook in some form. The MailChimp Add-In for Outlook is compatible with Outlook 2003, 2007, and 2010 for Windows Vista and above. The standard installation is free, and the premium edition costs $25 per user.
