Autoresponders Case Study

TextExpander’s Automatic Tips

Smile Software, which creates products like TextExpander, PDFpen and DiscLabel, has been using MailChimp's autoresponders for their tips series since early 2006. Smile's Jean MacDonald says the purpose of these emails is twofold:

  1. To help users get up and running quickly with new software
  2. To remind users they downloaded the software, and encourage them to use it

“A lot of times, people download demo software, open it once and then forget about it, because they don't have the time or attention to learn the software and integrate into their workflow,” says MacDonald. “If they never start using the software, they'll never buy a license.” She also says that the people who sign up for the tips emails often end up being their most interested and engaged customers, with higher conversion rates compared to other customer lists.
