Use Unique Discount Codes in SMS Automations
Mailchimp's unique discount code feature is now available for SMS messages in your automations. Unlike static codes that are the same for everyone, this feature generates a single-use, unique code for each contact when the message is sent.
This article explains how to create and add unique discount codes to SMS messages in the automation builder.
Before you start
Here are some things to know before you begin:
- This feature is available for users on an Essentials plan or higher.
- You must have setup SMS Marketing.
- You must have a connected Shopify store to use this feature.
- This functionality is currently available only for SMS messages within automations. It is not available for bulk (regular) SMS campaigns.
- You can still access and use your existing static (generic) discount codes from your store in both automations and bulk campaigns.
How to add a unique discount code
To create and add a new unique discount code to an SMS automation, follow these steps:
- Navigate to the Automations builder and choose an automation, or create a new one.
- In your automation journey, add or click on an SMS message, then click Edit.
- In the SMS editor, click the add discount code icon, a dropdown menu will open, showing existing static codes, choose a store discount code.
- Click Create a unique discount.
- A pop-up modal will appear. Follow the prompts to configure your unique discount.
- When you are finished, the code will be added to your message.
How it works
In the editor
After you add the unique discount, you will see a visual placeholder in the text editor and the message preview. This placeholder is added as a merge tag and will include a generic example, like EXAMPLE-123456789.
The code's expiration date and your store URL will also be added to the message as merge tags.
When sent
When your automation is active and an SMS message is triggered, Mailchimp will automatically generate a unique discount code for each recipient before sending. The merge tag placeholders for the code and the expiration date will be populated with this unique information for each contact.
