Westfield Creative, co-founded by Emily Ryan and Elizabeth Bogh, is a boutique email marketing agency that specializes in using Mailchimp to help brands grow.

They work with a range of industries from e-commerce and retail, to construction, higher education, and more, and have helped companies like Orangina, Cladwell, Tufts University, and Chisholm Vineyards meet their email marketing goals.

Emily sends a weekly “9 Things Sunday” email newsletter, a list of links to information her readers might find helpful, fun, and inspiring. It’s sent to a diverse audience of Mailchimp users, marketers, creatives, and small business owners, with the goal of achieving high engagement. While the content focuses on Mailchimp tips, she aims for the email to be something the reader looks forward to. She says that she views email as a one-to-one conversation with each of her readers, and that it should feel like having a conversation with a friend.

Thoughtful content curation pays off

Emily's newsletter achieved an average click rate of over 14%, and it recently peaked at 15.8%. This is well above the marketing industry average of 2.5%* . Her meticulous approach to maintaining a clean subscriber list has been crucial in sustaining the engagement. Starting from scratch, she used signup forms and organic social posting to grow her list into just under 1,500 dedicated readers who actively open her emails week after week.

Testing and AI features bring it all together

Emily employs a variety of features and tools both for her emails and ones created for her clients. First off, she finds value in Mailchimp’s AI features. “AI is here to help us. I consider it kind of like our assistant that we can count on if we need a little help with some copy or figuring out the best send time for an email,” she says. “The AI features in Mailchimp are saving us time more than I think anything else,” citing alt text generation as a major time saver. She also uses A/B testing for things like subject lines, as well as for the smallest details, including what font size her emails should be

Advice from an expert

When engagement is the goal, Emily recommends marketers focus on the receiver. “The number one thing you should lean into is simplifying your email marketing, like making your email’s design and layout as simple as you possibly can,” she says. “You do not need a mile long newsletter. People don't have time for that.” She says to make sure readers know what they’ll be receiving when they sign up for the email, and that it’s ok to have a small list, as long as they’re showing active interest in the content.
