A few weeks ago, we released a brand new version of the Mailchimp API. It was a pretty drastic departure from previous iterations, rewritten entirely from scratch. And since things were so different, we knew users would have questions about how to perform some of the routine tasks that had become part of their everyday workflows and integrations.
One of the important tasks that changed the most was list management. Because the process looked completely different in the new API, we knew we needed to provide some education around the new process. Enter Treehouse.
Treehouse is an online education platform that teaches people how to code. They offer a variety of courses for a wide range of skill levels, from simpler stuff (HTML basics) to more complex (writing iOS apps). They’ve got a badge system to encourage learning, and online support if users get stuck. So we were thrilled when Treehouse agreed that a Mailchimp API course would be helpful for both our users and their own.
Before Mailchimp’s API v3.0 was even in beta, I flew out to Portland, Oregon to shoot videos with the Treehouse team. By the time the API was ready, we realized it had diverged a bit from what we’d included in the original videos, so we went down to Treehouse’s Orlando office for some reshoots. We’re excited about the results.
The course walks users through getting information about their lists, how to filter down on a specific list instance, getting the list’s members, and adding a new list member with a POST request. Each video is its own self-contained lesson, but when you combine them all, they tell a story about how the Mailchimp API fits together as a whole.

The Mailchimp API Treehouse course is free to view, and new signups get a 2-week free trial of Treehouse’s full service. This includes their full library of code tutorials, access to teachers’ notes, and online support. We hope you enjoy the course, and would love to hear what you think. We also can’t wait to see what you do with the new API.
