Mailchimp introduced a new pricing model on May 15, 2019. If you had a paid Mailchimp account before the new pricing model was introduced, you'll keep your existing plan. We call this type of plan a legacy pricing plan.

Contact An individual member of your audience who can receive or view your marketing. Subscribed, unsubscribed, and non-subscribed contacts all make up your audience count. About Your Contacts
Send A term we use to measure the number of email campaigns you send. Each email sent to an individual subscriber counts as one send. For example, one campaign sent to 2,000 subscribers equals 2,000 sends. Test emails also count toward your monthly send limit.
New monthly plan Any recurring plan that Mailchimp offers to users on or after May 15, 2019. Learn more about these plans on our pricing page.
Types of Legacy Plans
Mailchimp has three legacy pricing plans available only to users who signed up before the new pricing plans were introduced: legacy Free plan, legacy Monthly Plan, and legacy Pay As You Go Plan.
Legacy Free plan Mailchimp's free, introductory plan that existing users are grandfathered into. The legacy Free plan allows you to send 12,000 total emails per month and have up to 2,000 total contacts across all audiences in the account.
Legacy Monthly Plan A recurring plan that existing users are grandfathered into. The legacy Monthly Plan charges once per month based on total subscribed contact count or send volume. This plan includes additional paid features.
Legacy Pay As You Go Plan A flexible email marketing plan designed for infrequent senders. The legacy Pay As You Go Plan includes access to the same paid features as the legacy Monthly Plan.
The new pricing model includes some changes to the Free plan. If you’re a legacy Free Mailchimp user, you’ll still have access to the free tools and features you already use. Adding certain features, like new audiences to your account, will be limited. You can upgrade to a new paid plan at any time.
The new Free plan gives you access to certain Mailchimp features, but limits your total contacts, as well as your daily and weekly sends. Legacy users can keep up to 2,000 contacts across all audiences in your account, and send up to 12,000 emails per month. In any 24-hour period, you can send up to 2,000 emails.
With upcoming changes to our pricing structure, legacy users on the Free plan will use whole-audience billing, which means that every contact you store counts toward your audience limit, including subscribed, unsubscribed, and non-subscribed contacts. Cleaned or archived contacts do not count toward your audience limit.
Sending limits can be applied in any way, to any variety of segments, as well as any combination of Regular, Plain-Text, RSS, or A/B Testing Campaigns.
If you exceed the 2,000 contact limit in your Free plan, a hold will be placed on sending live email campaigns or test emails until you upgrade to a paid plan, or reduce your contact count. You'll still be able to work on your email campaigns and collect and import new contacts.
Mailchimp's legacy Monthly Plan is for frequent senders who have more than 2,000 subscribed contacts, or who want to use paid features to better engage their contacts. Pricing tiers are based on the number of subscribed contacts in your account, up to 52,000. After you surpass that number, we'll factor your monthly email campaign sends into your payment as well. Non-subscribed and unsubscribed transactional recipients will count toward your monthly bill if you've sent to them in the past 30 days.
If you use a legacy Monthly Plan, you can downgrade to a new free plan (there’s a one-time limit for the lifetime of your account). After you downgrade, you’ll have 90 days to upgrade back into a legacy Monthly Plan. Our system does not support switching from a legacy Monthly Plan to the new pricing model at this time.
About Legacy Monthly Billing
If you have 52,000 subscribed contacts or fewer, monthly billing is based on your total subscriber count, and you can send unlimited email campaigns. Mailchimp automatically adjusts your billing tier as your audience grows and shrinks, based on your highest subscriber total across all audiences over the previous billing cycle.

Mailchimp treats each audience in your account as a completely separate entity, so duplicate subscribed contacts are included in your total subscriber count. For example, if a subscriber's email address appears in three different audiences, it is counted three times.
If you have a legacy Monthly plan with more than 52,000 subscribed contacts, you are considered a high-volume sender. This means your monthly billing is based on your subscriber count and send volume. The high-volume send limit is 12 times the maximum number of subscribers in a tier.
If you exceed your send limit, we’ll automatically move your account to the appropriate pricing tier. Any attempted campaign send counts toward your limit, including emails that bounced or were stopped due to compliance review. We also count recurring campaign sends, such as automation and RSS emails toward your send limit. Signup form response emails do not count toward sends.
Legacy Pay As You Go
The Pay As You Go plan uses email credits that you purchase to cover your sending needs. Each email sent to an individual contact costs one credit. It works best for infrequent or inconsistent senders, such as users who send quarterly newsletters or promote seasonal events.
As long as you use credits purchased before May 15, 2019, the legacy version includes access to the same paid features as the legacy Monthly Plan. If you need to buy new credits, you’ll see some changes related to the new pricing model. Learn more about the new Pay As You Go plan.
Mailchimp offers paid add-ons for users who want to supplement their legacy plan with additional features.
Mailchimp Pro is a suite of advanced features you can add to a legacy paid Mailchimp account for a flat monthly fee of $199.00 (USD). These features include Multivariate Testing, Compliance and Delivery Insights, and the ability to stop delivery on certain sent email campaigns.
Pro is available as an add-on to legacy paid plans only. Our new pricing model includes Pro-level features with the Premium plan.
Mandrill is a powerful transactional email platform built by Mailchimp. Use it to send personalized, one-to-one e-commerce emails, and automated transactional emails like password resets, order confirmations, and welcome messages.
Mandrill is available as a paid add-on for Monthly Plans. If you use Mailchimp Pro and Mandrill together, we'll give you a limited number of complimentary Mandrill sends per month.
Social Profiles gathers data on your subscribers that's publicly available on social networks. Use this information to send targeted emails by subscriber age, gender, or social networks they use. Social Profiles is available to add on to paid accounts, and pricing is based on your subscriber count.
