Migrate Your Constant Contact Account to Mailchimp
In this article, you'll learn how to migrate your Constant Contact account to Mailchimp. We’ll step you through processes for your contacts, lists, segments, flows, and integrations.
Before you start
Here are some things to know before you begin this process.
- If you don’t already have a Mailchimp account, learn more at How to Create an Account. You may also want to learn how to verify your email domain.
- Mailchimp marketing plans are priced according to the number of contacts in your audience and the number of emails you send each month. Learn more about our pricing and how we calculate additional charges.
- In Mailchimp, you can categorize your email contacts based on their email marketing status, such as subscribed or unsubscribed.
How it works
Migrating your Constant Contact account information to Mailchimp is a multi-step process.
- First, you’ll need to review your Constant Contact account and record important information such as the number of contacts and lists you maintain.
- Next, you’ll export your contacts from Constant Contact and import them into Mailchimp.
- Once your contacts are imported into Mailchimp, you’ll duplicate and test your segments, automated workflows, and templates in Mailchimp.
- Finally, you’ll connect your Mailchimp account to any external integrations you’re using with Constant Contact.
Let’s get started!
Prepare your Constant Contact account information for migration
The first step toward migrating your Constant Contact account is to review and assess it. You’ll need to record the following information.
- Contacts
Review and prepare your contact information so you’re importing up-to-date data. To learn more, check out Prepare a Constant Contact List for Import. You’ll also want to know the number of contacts you currently have. You’ll use this information to choose the Mailchimp marketing plan that best fits your needs. - Lists
Document each of your Constant Contact list names so you can duplicate them as your Mailchimp audience names. You’ll also want to make note of any custom fields you’ve created to be sure the data migrates properly. - Segments
Note the names of your list segments and the conditions and logic used to create them. Learn more about Mailchimp segments. - Templates
Later in the process, you’ll export the HTML code for each email template you currently use in Constant Contact. For now, we recommend creating documentation around each template, including its name and purpose. - Automations and flows
List the flows you’re currently using in Constant Contact, including the triggers and logic for each. You’ll create corresponding customer journey maps in Mailchimp. To learn more, check out About Customer Journeys. - Integrations
Take note of any external services, such as CRM or e-commerce apps you’ve connected to your Constant Contact account. Browse our integrations directory to find the same integrations.
Now that you’ve got the information you need, let’s start migrating your data!
Migrate your customer data
Your customer data includes your lists of customers and any custom data fields you’ve created.
To migrate your customer data to Mailchimp, you’ll first export your lists from Constant Contact, and then import the data into Mailchimp. Once the data has been imported, you’ll use the documentation about your existing Constant Contact data to re-create your segments and automations.
To migrate your Constant Contact customer data, follow these steps.
- Export each Constant Contact list to a CSV file. Be sure to keep each list separate. Find out more at Constant Contact’s article Export your email or SMS contacts or lists into a spreadsheet.
- In your Mailchimp account, create an audience for each Constant Contact list you want to import. To learn more, check out Create a Mailchimp Audience.
- Import each CSV file to its proper Mailchimp audience. To learn more, check out Import email contacts from a file. Be sure the data is mapped to the proper Mailchimp field type. For example, any data that contains a date should be mapped to a Mailchimp Date field type.
- Check that all data is accurate, including any custom field types.
Nice! You’ve migrated your customer lists to Mailchimp.
Create your email templates
Next, you’ll create your email templates to Mailchimp. First, you’ll copy the HTML code from each of your Constant Contact email templates. Then, you’ll use that code to create an email template in Mailchimp.
To create your email templates, follow these steps.
- In your Constant Contact account, go to the Templates section.
- Export the HTML code for each email template.
- Create a corresponding email template in your Mailchimp account and upload or paste the HTML from your Constant Contact template. To learn more, check out Import a Custom HTML Template.
- Validate the import by sending a test email to be sure the design renders correctly and matches your original design.
Create segments and automations
Next up is creating your list segments and automations to Mailchimp.
To complete this task, follow these steps.
- In each of your Mailchimp audiences, create the segments you documented for the corresponding Constant Contact list. To learn more, check out Create and Send to a Segment.
- For each automation in your Constant Contact account, create a corresponding classic automation or customer journey map in Mailchimp. To learn more, check out Create a Classic Automation or Create a Customer Journey.
- Test each segment and automation to be sure everything works as expected.
Migrate your integrations
Finally, you’ll want to connect your integrations.
To connect an integration, follow these steps.
- In your Mailchimp account, click Integrations, then click Discover.
- Browse our lists of supported integrations or enter the integration name in the search field.
- Click the integration name and follow the connection steps.
- Test your connections and data syncs.
That’s great! You’ve migrated your account to Mailchimp.
